Project Overview

A retired couple in Kumeu had found their dream home — but the ageing roof was letting them down. Our team at HDK Long Run Roofing stripped back the old roofing across three separately built sections and installed fresh .55 Trim Rib long run in marine grade, giving the home decades more life and clean water flowing into the tanks again.

Why This Long Run Re-Roof in Kumeu Was Needed

Gilly and their partner had recently purchased their dream property in Kumeu. The existing roof was outdated, showing significant wear across three separate extensions built over different periods — each with its own roofing of varying age and condition. Rust from the old iron sheets had been leaching into the home’s rainwater tanks, contaminating the water supply. They needed a single, reliable long run roof system that would unify the entire structure, protect it for decades, and restore clean water collection.

Our Approach to the Kumeu Re-Roof

We assessed the property and identified that the far end of the house had the strongest timber framework, so we started there. Beginning from the most solid section gave us a clean, secure working zone while we progressed through the older, more weathered parts of the home.

Our re-roofing team supplied and installed .55 gauge Trim Rib long run in marine grade — a profile selected for its corrosion resistance and durability in Kumeu’s conditions — along with a batch of new insulation to improve thermal comfort throughout the home.

The Challenge: Ageing Timber Beneath the Surface

Once the old sheets came off, we found sections of timber that had deteriorated over the years of exposure. Some purlins needed full replacement, while in other areas we refastened them with blue screws — heavy-duty fixings designed to secure timber against uplift during Auckland’s windy season. Addressing each section individually rather than blanket-fixing the whole frame ensured every sheet of new iron was anchored into solid, reliable timber.

The Finished Result

The finished roof is a complete .55 gauge Trim Rib long run metal roofing system in marine grade, covering all three previously separate roof sections as one unified surface. Matching flashings tie the different rooflines together, and new insulation sits beneath the sheets. With the old corroded iron gone, Gilly’s rainwater tanks now collect clean water — one of the outcomes they valued most.

What We Are Most Proud Of

On time and on budget — Four days from strip to completion, exactly as quoted. No surprise extras, no drawn-out timeline.

Sorted the hidden damage — The deteriorated timber was not something Gilly could have seen from the ground. Finding and fixing it before laying the new iron means the roof sits on a framework that will hold for decades.

Clean water restored — With rust-free marine-grade iron overhead, the rainwater tanks are now collecting water worth drinking. For a couple settling into their dream home, that mattered as much as the roof itself.
